2017 East Anglian Young Composer Competition: Results

Congratulations to 17-year-old Luke Askew who won the East Anglian Young Composer of the Year 2017.

Luke, from Stowmarket, won the regional final of the competition at Snape, and then went on to win the overall East Anglian award. The Cambridge regional final was won by 15-year-old Olivia Ransome from Cambridge.

Their compositions were performed at a concert at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge on Sunday 29 October, 2017 by members of the Phaedra Ensemble, together with a selection of specially commended entries from both Finals. A new work by Alexia Sloane, winner of last year's Cambridge Young Composer of the Year, was also performed at the concert.

Judge Ewan Campbell said the entries this year had been of an extremely high standard and he congratulated all the young composers, whose ages ranged from six to 17.

All 23 composers who entered the competitions had their pieces played at the Snape and Cambridge Finals by the Phaedra Ensemble – with feedback provided by Ewan Campbell and the musicians.

The competition is part of an exciting initiative to extend opportunities for young composers across East Anglia. In 2017 the long-standing Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition was opened up to children from Essex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Hertfordshire as well as Cambridgeshire. It is run by by Aldeburgh Young Musicians at Snape Maltings.
